For my capstone project at Holberton, I, Jose Alvarez de Lugo, worked with Jorge Zafra, and Paulo Morillo from the Colombia Holberton School. We partnered up with the founder of East Rock Software, Stephen Robinson, Ph.D., to work on a tool for the recruiting branch of his company. To learn more about Transfer Learning, we were tasked with training a convolutional neural network to classify the CIFAR 10 Dataset, using one of the pre-trained applications listed in Keras Applications, and achieve a validation accuracy of 88% or above. I went with the VGG Model, which earned top performance in the ILSVRC 2014 competition. Below we will discuss what is transfer learning, CIFAR 10 Dataset and my findings through out this project.
Alex Krizhevsky, Ilya Sutskeyer, and Geoffrey E. Hinton from the University of Toronto created a neural network architecture, using convolutional layers, and called it ‘AlexNet’. They competed and won the ImageNet Large-Scale Visual Recognition Challenge (ILSVRC). Here we will summarize the paper in which they describe the architecture and training of their deep convolutional network. They pioneered object detection and image classification as we know it today.
